The Honourable Mentions: Eight Grapes History Left Out

Not every great grape made the “noble” list.

Some stayed local.
Some were overshadowed by more famous neighbours.
Some simply never had the same historical spotlight.

But in their regions, these grapes are just as expressive, structured, and capable of producing serious, age-worthy wines.

This class explores the honourable mentions. The varieties that built iconic regions and traditions, even if they were never crowned part of the classic noble lineup.

We travel from the Loire Valley with Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, to the hills of Piedmont for Nebbiolo, Tuscany for Sangiovese, and Spain for Tempranillo. From there we head to Beaujolais for Gamay, Austria for Grüner Veltliner, and finish in Hungary with Furmint and the legendary wines of Tokaj.

Along the way we talk about why some grapes became global benchmarks, why others remained rooted in place, and how climate, culture, and history continue to shape the story of wine.
